This Minor Injuries Management course is designed for advanced practitioners who are new to the role and transitioning from general practice nursing (GPN) and hospital roles. The course is mapped against the four pillars of advanced practice: Clinical Practice, Leadership and Management, Education, and Research. It aims to equip practitioners with the knowledge, skills, and competencies required to effectively manage minor injuries in primary care and urgent care setting

Aims

  1. To provide comprehensive knowledge on the diagnosis and management of minor injuries.
  2. To enhance clinical skills in assessing and treating a wide range of minor injuries.
  3. To develop leadership and management capabilities in minor injuries settings.
  4. To foster a commitment to ongoing education and research in minor injuries management.

Learning Objectives

Ethical and Legal Foundations:

    • Understand the principles and implications of consent, capacity, and safeguarding in healthcare.
    • Master the techniques of history taking and maintain accurate, clear, and efficient documentation

History taking – Head Injuries and Wound Management s

    • Undertake history taking in relation to minor injuries
    • Conduct a systematic assessment and management of burns, distinguishing between different severity levels.
    • Classify and apply appropriate wound dressings based on injury type.
    • Implement evidence-based care for bites (insect, animal, human).
    • Evaluate and manage head injuries, understanding potential complications.

Eye and C-spine , and Upper Limb

    • Recognise and treat C-spine minor injuries and be able to identify those that need onward referral.
    • Consider “Silver Trauma” principles in relation to injury assessment and management
    • Able to triage and assess undifferentiated eye injuries and red eye complaints
    • Undertake a systematic approach to eye examination and corneal emergencies
    • Understand the anatomy, assessment, and management of shoulder and other upper limb injuries.

Upper and Lower Limb

    1. Engage in practical upper limb examination sessions, utilising workbook guidance and an “OSCE-type” guide sheet.
    2. Diagnose and manage a range of hand disorders and injuries, from nail injuries to conditions like carpal tunnel and tenosynovitis.
    3. Understand the anatomy, assessment, and treatment of lower limb injuries, focusing on hip, knee, ankle, and foot injuries.
    4. Identify and manage strains, sprains, and common sports-related injuries.

Safety, Education, and Patient-Centred Care

    • Recognise red flags in minor injuries, ensuring patient safety and proper referral.
    • Implement safety netting strategies and provide worsening care advice.
    • Effectively educate patients on safe discharge, potential complications, and additional resources.

This course is suitable for nurses and registered healthcare professionals working in acute and unscheduled care settings, such as emergency departments, walk-in clinics, urgent care centres, primary care or other community and first contact settings.

Pre Requisites

  • This course is suitable for nurses and registered healthcare professionals working in acute and unscheduled care settings, such as emergency departments, walk-in clinics, urgent care centres, primary care or other community and first contact settings
  • Have a UK or overseas degree from a recognised institution or equivalent professional or other qualification.
  • Hold professional registration with the relevant Nursing or Allied Health Professional Body/Council or the GMC.
  • You should be employed in a role that will support development of clinical skills during the programme should you wish to complete the competency portfolio which is optional.
  • You should be working in a relevant clinical environment in which you can achieve the clinical skills required
