What is the main point of Genesis 50? ›

In the final chapter of Genesis, Israel's family fulfilled his dying wish to be buried in the Promised Land. Joseph also made his family pledge to one day return his remains to the Promised Land, a vow that the Jews would fulfill four hundred years later.

Joseph reassured them of his love and forgiveness, and they were not to be afraid that he would do anything to hurt or harm them. He knew that God had divinely planned and allowed him to suffer, but it was for his good and the good of his family. A divine perspective of life enabled him to be a forgiving person.

According to the Bible, Joseph was embalmed and buried in a coffin in Egypt, after having his people swear to carry his bones away. Later midrash identify his first entombment in a royal mausoleum, or as cast into the Nile.

You shall carry up my bones from here: This promise was fulfilled some 400 years later, when Israel left Egypt (Exodus 13:19). This command showed that Joseph's heart was in the Promised Land.

God blesses the humans—a key theme in this book—and gives them a garden from which they can begin their task of building the world. It is important to note that these humans have a choice as to how they are going to build this world, represented neatly in the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
