Lumbini is the birthplace of Buddha according to Buddhist tradition, and was made a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. The World Heritage Committee, meeting in New Delhi, on Thursday gave Nepal until Feb. 1, 2025 to submit a new report on the state of conservation and said the matter would be considered again at next year’s annual meeting.

A panel of U.N.-backed independent experts has expressed grave concern about increased discrimination and violence against the minority Ahmadi community in Pakistan and urged authorities to ensure their protection. The experts, who work under a Human Rights Council mandate but do not speak for the United Nations, said in a statement Thursday they are alarmed by recent reports of violence and discrimination against Ahmadis. Ahmadis are adherents of Ahmadiyya, an Islamic messianic movement that originated in the late 19th century. Pakistan’s Parliament declared them non-Muslims in 1974, and they have been repeatedly targeted by Islamic extremists, drawing condemnation from domestic and international human right groups.

The lawyer for the president of Cambodia's main opposition party says his client has been found guilty of of defamation and has been ordered to pay $1.5 million in damages to the government. Teav Vannol, president of the opposition Candlelight Party, was not present for the court’s ruling. He holds dual Cambodian-U.S. citizenship and is believed to be outside Cambodia. His lawyer, Choung Chou Ngy, said he will talk with his client about whether to file an appeal. Cambodia’s government has long been accused of using the judicial system to persecute critics and political opponents. Concerns have been raised that the World Heritage Site could lose its coveted status because of a nearby dam project on the Mekong River. Laos seemed agreeable to the idea, with its delegate telling the group at its annual meeting in New Delhi on Thursday that authorities were prepared to work “hand in hand” with UNESCO to preserve the site.
